377 Days - Blog #18 - losing sleep or chinese food after a show

Damn it.  This writing a blog every day thing is going to be challenging some nights.  Especially those nights when I decide, yeah, a mai tai or two would be lovely at the (surprisingly) only place in town open after 9pm on a Friday after the show.

But that’s the thing isn’t it?  The thing about doing a show.  The going out after in spite of the fact you know you really ought to go home and go to bed.  Or go home and write your blog so you can get to bed at a relatively decent hour… when of course, you still have to get up on a Saturday to go back to your work… only it’s not really work.  Well, not the work you do every Monday through Friday.  It’s the work you wish you had more time to do, promoting and networking with the Worcester Writers Collaborative.  And… maybe you would have more time except you decided that you would spend all that extra time you weren’t doing writerly things doing theaterly things… and you are back at the point where you  decided theater was something from which you should take a break.  Because time is important.  And giving it away for drama isn’t worth it.

Except… of course… at the Chinese Restaurant you sit at a table too large for a conversation with everyone.  And besides, of course, none of the cast knows who you really are.  Just that ghost on Facebook, who floated into a couple rehearsals and sells tickets.  And yet there you are in the middle of the adult section of the table with friends of every generation of your life at Barre Players.  And there are memories.   Talk of future plans.  Of theater.  Of life.  Of saving the world.  Of a little bit of that drama, but you push it out of hearing.

And then you … I think, oh yeah… mediocre Chinese food, way too strong mixed drinks, and being surrounded by people who are friends merely by the connection of a stage… well, okay, it is worth the loss of an hour or two of sleep.

Even the earworm of the Trolley Song that one of those aforementioned memories planted in my mind.

Well, with the weight of my eyelids right now, it could actually be a lullaby.
