377 days, Blog #160 Reboot
So… here’s the thing.
Tonight someone asked me how my blog was going. If you’ve checked in, you may have noticed
the radio silence. I would like to say
it’s perfectly justifiable to have abandoned this discipline/ambition. I did spend the first two/three months of
2015 throwing a chunk of creative thinking towards directing a play. Indeed, towards a play that I found out I was
directing two days before rehearsals began.
So… no planning time. Just an
instant tornado. It was fun. It was challenging. It was a lot of what theater should be (and
hopefully I will get to that soon). It
was tiring. But… did it justify total
absorption of my thinking matter? Maybe.
Maybe that was just an excuse.
Whatever. April is
peeking around the corner. (Yes, the
snow is going to go away and we will be complaining about the mercifully absent
bugs before too long). It’s time to get
back on track.
I’m already there anyway.
I spent two hours tonight with the Worcester Writers Collaborative at one
of our weekly writeins. This iteration
is pretty stripped down. We show up,
chat for a few minutes. Maybe five. Maybe ten.
Then we just get to it and write.
Tonight there were snacks… but we haven’t even really bothered with food
all that much. Just the quiet and the
writing.
Tonight I actually used all of those two hours to
write. I probably could have continued
if our mandated completion at nine o’clock didn’t insist on ticking itself into
reality.
I haven’t typed up my handwritten pages, but I’m pretty
confident I crossed the 10,000 word threshold tonight. 10,000 words of a new manuscript. A new manuscript that had the unfortunate
coincidence of planting its seed of inspiration during tech week. But luckily neither tech week nor production
nor the vast quantities of wine consumed both during cast parties and supper
club managed to starve that inspiration.
Indeed, maybe it helped.
That and this random song from the first Hobbit movie I
heard on Pandora and decided I needed to own and play a gazillion times on my
way to and from work. Hey, you’re not in
my car. I can listen to the same song a
gazillion times if I want to.
Anyway, I’m pretty jazzed about this idea. Pretty jazzed that in spite of the
inconvenience of schedule that it didn’t get lost in the shuffle of time.
It is about time. Travel between different
times. I’ve gotten rather lost in the
research of the origin story, but also some of the destinations. I hope to make it a series. I also hope to do some first hand research in
the land of the aes sídhe this summer.
But back to that time thing.
It does strike me, as I come back to this blog or force myself to write
this evening and other evenings (and maybe an hour or two at work when I should
have been doing number related things) or let a play consume a lot of my cognizant
ability for two months plus, that time and how we I use it is a constant
choice. Well, duh. Maybe I should be more specific. The choice is making the time to be
creative.
So, without spending too much more time expostulating, I am
going to re-commit myself to taking the time to write. Not only this blog. But my novel(s) – yes, they are a package. Hey, maybe my excitement about said project
will inspire me on topics to write here.
The key is to write.
And that goes for you, too.
Make the time. Write.
